Excerpt:
“I’m not supposed to be here,” Eugene admitted on what would be their seventh time to get together.
“Me either, not that it matters to me what they think. I’m shocked you’re here, though.”
“Why?”
“Because I know how much you value your pop’s approval.”
Eugene sighed, and rested his head on his knee. “I’m beginning to see that I’m never going to get it. Not as long as I don’t fit what his idea of a man is supposed to be. I’ve tried praying on it, but the Lord isn’t answering.”
“Maybe because he doesn’t see anything wrong with who you are. The old ones always say that the gods made us the way they wanted us to be, so who are we to argue?”
“I still don’t see how you can believe in more than one god.”
“And I still don’t see how you can only believe in one,” Sage shot back.
“You’re going to be leaving soon, aren’t you?” Eugene asked.
“Few more weeks, yeah. You could come with me if you want.”
“Like hell.”
“Why not?”
“My pops would kill me for leaving him high and dry out of the shack.”
“Is that crab shack your dream or his?”
“How do you mean?”
“Is it what you want to do, or is it what your pops wants you to do?”

NatureOTheBeast_600x956

Excerpt: Gravel shot from beneath my tires as the car skidded to a stop. I tore toward the house, leaving the door open, the shopping bags long forgotten.

The sight welcoming me when I burst through the entrance made my blood run cold. The carpet was gathered on one side of the living room as if someone had slipped on it. There was broken glass everywhere, and some puddles of amber liquid, which, judging from the stinging aroma, were what remained of our collection of fine spirits.
But the really scary image was that of the enraged werewolf snarling and snapping his fangs at Chris. My friend was crouched on the other side of the room, holding on to the rifle as if his life depended on it, which might not have been far from the truth. Nic snarled at Chris, Chris threatened and yelled, and Sean stood in the middle, shouting at both.
“What is going on? Chris, put that gun down.” I really have to remove the weapons from the house.
As expected, nobody heard me over the ruckus.
“Enough!”
The single word snapped, the magically amplified sound colliding with the walls and vibrating like the clapper hitting the interior of an old church bell. The guys froze.
“What, for fuck’s sake, is happening here?”
“I told you. One second we were playing; the next he goes ballistic.”
“Chris, put that gun down.”
“Have you lost your mind? Look at him.”
He had a point. Nic looked feral, his eyes black and wild, his fangs dripping and exposed.
“Nic! Enough.”
His ears twitched, but he gave no other sign that he’d heard me. My power flared, and a heavy stream hit him head on. It wasn’t meant to hurt, only to demand submission.

About the author

LAYLA DORINE lives among the sprawling prairies of Midwestern America, in a house with more cats than people. She loves hiking, fishing, swimming, martial arts, camping out, photography, cooking, and dabbling with several artistic mediums. In addition, she loves to travel and visit museums, historic, and haunted places.
Layla got hooked on writing as a child, starting with poetry and then branching out, and she hasn’t stopped writing since. Hard times, troubled times, the lives of her characters are never easy, but then what life is? The story is in the struggle, the journey, the triumphs and the falls. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she’s met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes its aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. When she isn’t writing, or wandering somewhere outdoors, she can often be found curled up with a good book and a kitty on her lap.

Excerpt

I had several orders to fill, but I couldn’t concentrate. The potion business didn't pay much, but as it was only a ruse, I didn't care.

Cleaning up other peoples', or in my case other immortals', screw-ups paid a whole lot more. It also took a lot out of me, but, hey, a girl's gotta live, and since selling my body held no appeal, that was my only option. So I made bodies and any traces of magic reckless immortals left behind disappear, and tried to stay out of the line of fire. Of course, working closely with vampires and werewolves didn't make the job easy. On the other hand, I was lucky to be working mostly with their kind. I shuddered to think how much more difficult it would be with demons or fae as customers. Good thing they were used to cleaning their own messes.
Eventually, I gave up pretending to work and went outside. The hot air of the afternoon hit me hard and I breathed it in in long, deep gulps. It tasted foul and oppressing on my tongue, reminding me again how much I hated the heat. Not even the clean mountain air could make it palatable. And no matter how far I was from civilization, I could still feel it around me, smelling like sickness and decay. It was such a far cry from the crisp air of the Otherworld. There everything was sharper, fresher. The forests were always green, and the grass smelled like spring. I shook my head, bringing myself back to reality. What was of the point dreaming of what you couldn't have?
I filled my lungs and the foul smell hit me again. My nose curled in distaste, my stomach convulsing. I dry swallowed, trying to get rid of the awful taste, and cursed myself for dwelling in old memories. That had to be the reason everything seemed worse today.
Sun washed over me as I stepped into the backyard. Closing my eyes, I basked in its glow. As much as I hated summer, I loved the sun. Yet another contrast of my personality. But then again, what would you expect when I was made out of contrasts from the beginning? Fae's blood mixed with human, demon and angel, animal and water; those conflicting elements meant to give me access to all these worlds tended to battle inside me. It didn't work out for my maker as well as he'd hoped, but, as the saying went, you can't have it all.

My book is out tomorrow and I'm ....

I'm terrified. It's not even my first story.  How pathetic is that?

But this one is so different from everything I've written before and I've put so much of myself into it, I can't even begin to guess what would you all think about it. Usually I have a pretty good grip on the way a new story is going to be received. Not this time. Of course, not founding out is not an option. I can't avoid the social media, not matter how much I would want to, and I am not sure it would be such a good idea. As I see it, my only option is to man up and believe in myself and in my work. Easier said than done.

But first, I'll watch MASH 4077 until I drop from my feet and try not to think about the release tomorrow.

"Okay. Okay. I give up. I give up."

Alex rolled off. "See? I’m still the champ. I own you."
"Yeah, you’re the champ all right."
They huffed and puffed and rested side by side.
Alex’s mind started to drift. He whined. "Oh, man."
"What now, Alex?"
"Just wondering." He stared up toward the clouds. "Where will we be next year?"
Shawn sensed the abrupt mood change. He wanted to undo it. "Next year? Hell, I’m not even sure where I’ll be an hour from now. And who cares?"
"I’m serious, Shawn. This is all going to change. You. Me. Pam. We’re all going to go our separate ways. College is going to change everything. If I go to college. I wish I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I can’t…."
"What, no sixty-million-dollar contract to play for the Buffalo Bills?"
"Yeah, right." Alex’s mood commenced free fall. "I don’t even know if my knee will make it through the rest of this season."
Shawn hadn’t planned on a pity party. Not today. He needed to turn this around. "Alex. You’re bringing me down. Look, it’ll all work out all right. You’ll see. But right now, I’m hungry and Pam is waiting for us. And speaking of Pam." He rolled onto his side and brought his face dangerously close to his best bud. If they had been any closer, they would have kissed.
Tony’s mouth dropped open. His jealous heart skipped a beat.
Shawn hadn’t planned on bringing this up today, but as long as they were on the subject…. "So, Alex. When are you going to ask Pam out?"

Excerpt

“MY MOM IS coming to visit.” Sean put the phone down and stared wild-eyed at me.
“Okay. Cool.”
But it wasn’t okay or cool. Sean’s mother wasn’t your everyday mom but one of the most powerful fae this side of the Door. Ancient magical creatures, almost as old as Earth itself, the fae had moved from their place of birth, the Otherworld, many millennia ago. They had come through the Door and walked among the humans, using their magic to hide in plain sight. The most powerful of them, the Lords who ruled them, had stayed behind; although, there were some who had welcomed the change of a new world. While my suspicions that she was one of those Lords remained unanswered, there was no denying her power.
And as far as I knew, she hadn’t left her home in almost ten years. Last time she did, she placed Sean in my care, without him knowing so, I might add, and that was it. I became his guardian, which put her in my debt. Sort of. Not that I was thinking of collecting any time soon.
After she asked me to watch over her boy, I was nervous. After all, if anything went wrong and something happened to Sean, my head would be on the line; but on the other hand, it didn’t feel like she gave me much choice in the matter. It was phrased as a request, but her tone suggested otherwise. Why she had chosen me, a mixed-breed fae with little knowledge of the World Above, I had no idea.
So, trying to respect her conditions, I tracked his movements and orchestrated what seemed like a random encounter. I bumped into him, spilled a whole cup of scalding coffee on his trousers, and offered to take him out for a drink to make it up to him. He’d been a bit wary at being asked out by a chick, but he went with it. And what started like an awkward date, turned out to be the beginning of an honest friendship.
So why was Sari coming over now?
“‘Okay, cool?’ Didn’t you hear what I just said? My mother is coming to visit.”
“I heard you the first time. So what? Your mom is cool.” And deadly. I sipped my tea and smirked at him.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
“Of course I am. How often do I get the chance to see you this flustered?”

Excerpt

Dare closed his eyes for a moment and shivered again, realizing that he was tired and hadn’t had a meal all day. He climbed to his feet, his guitar clutched in one hand and the other gripping the railing as he swayed. Damn, he thought as he waited for the dizziness to pass. It had to be pretty late if he was feeling this dizzy and weak. With a tired sigh he shuffled inside, tucked his guitar back into its case, and wandered into the kitchen to see that the clock read a quarter to five. Holy shit. No wonder he was starving and ready to drop; he’d been on that damned porch all fucking day. He vaguely remembered heading out there at ten, with a cup of coffee, his cigarettes, and his guitar. He checked his pocket and found the pack, happy he hadn’t burned through too many. Sometimes he smoked them all without realizing it. A waste really, or at least that’s the way he saw it. If he was smoking something, he wanted to at least remember the taste of it.
His hands shook as he poured himself a glass of milk. Then he sat at the table, drinking the milk and eating an apple. It would have to do until he could get dinner cooked. He knew the others would be home soon, and hungry. Not that they really wanted him messing with the stove. His dreams were unpredictable, and twice he’d started unintentional fires, staring off into space while the pan beside him burned. Today, though, he figured it would be fine, easy really, to cut up an onion, brown some beef, and toss soup into the pot on top of it to make a meal. He tried hard not to hum as he worked. He tried not to think of music at all. Instead, he wrote out a grocery list while the meat browned, stirring it occasionally so it didn’t burn. He forced himself to focus on what they needed and not the soft rhythm pulsing in the corner of his mind.
It helped to think of the last time he’d burned a meal and Sionn’s disgusted reaction as he’d stood with the fire extinguisher in hand, red faced, and screaming about how Dare couldn’t manage to go thirty goddamned minutes without drifting away to dreamland and how he could have burned the whole place down goddammit all to bloody hell! Dare focused on how ashamed he’d felt over the mess he’d made and how angry he’d made Sionn, and he finished cooking the meal without incident. He checked the time. They’d all be out of work by now, unless one or more had been asked to work overtime, in which case, they’d all be late, coming home in the car they shared. Dare sat at the table listening to the tick of the clock and idly drumming his fingers against the wood.
While he waited, he let the music take over. He lay his head down on the table and stared at the counter, his eyes glazing over as he entered the waking dream. He was oblivious to the roar of the Charger’s engine as it pulled up to the house, the slamming of doors, and the chatter of voices as the other members of the band came in.
