My upcoming releases

For those of you wondering, yes, I am still alive and writing, though my day job has taken a lot of my time. This year has been a busy one so far, with a 55k words novel finished in less than 4 months and two short stories in June.

Chance Encounter, a sweet menage will appear in  September in the Three is Not a Crowd anthology from Wayward Ink Publishing.
Dreams do Come True is a short story written for the Goodreads's Don't Read in the Closet event, which will be released sometime this summer.

As for the novel...it is a MF fantasy story, placed in Romania. No release date for this one either, but here's hoping it will be sooner rather than later.

I love to hear from my readers, so please stop by anytime. :)

When I got to my apartment, I wasn’t feeling any better. I was restless and hurting and angry as fuck and their mixed scents in my place weren’t doing me any favors. I fumbled with the backpack I had dropped on the floor of my living room, trying to find my phone. I was greeted by a dozen or more messages from Vicks, one of my twin’s mates. Since she had mated my brother she had this weird connection to me too and could feel whenever I was experiencing strong emotions for an extended period. I assumed everything that had happened since yesterday would qualify for that. I sent a quick “I’ll be fine” type of reply to stop her from harassing me and went through my contacts.
Even if I hadn’t called that particular number in a couple of months, it was still at the top of my favorites list. He was my best friend since childhood, so it made sense I’d call him more than anyone else. It just hit me then that I’d been so lost in my own life, I barely had time to catch up with him or my family unless something critical was going on. I pressed the call button and plastered the phone to my ear, pacing around the room as it rang a few times.
“Come on, Blake, fucking pick up!” I hung up and tried again. I really needed to talk to my best friend right now. It rang twice and went straight to voicemail. Hearing Blake’s voice brought tears to my eyes and something snapped inside of me.
“Blake, I wish you’d have picked up the phone.” I laughed softly, shaking my head. “It’s funny, I think this is the first time I call you and you don’t pick up. Either way… thanks for being my friend, chibi. I… I don’t….” I lowered the hand that was holding my phone and let my head fall back, taking a few deep breaths. “Blakey, tell everyone I love them and… yeah, those who know me, really know me, will understand. Sayonara, chibi-tan.”
StrengthtoLetGo-3Drender
I hung up and let the rage take over. I turned around at impossible speed and threw the phone with a loud roar. It hit the wall and shattered into a million pieces. I was crying. I knew because I could feel the heaves and tears, but the crushing pain was battling with the anger taking over my mind. I had lost my soul and my reason to live when I’d lost Kieran and Kayden. What was left of me was nothing more than the warrior inside. A true samurai would not waste away, waiting for death to claim him at the end of a miserable life. He’d die in battle, an honorable death his final legacy.
My twin, Shishou, my co-beta, Ren, my sister, even Blake… they’d get it, they’d explain it properly to my children. They probably won’t understand, just like I hadn’t when my parents had left us. I prayed that unlike their father, they would never get to a point in life where they’d understand this decision of mine. It meant they’d go through a world of pain and that was the last thing I wanted for Ryuu and Kimmie.
I took off everything but my jeans. No point in having anything else on. Werewolf rules were sometimes mind-boggling. You could shift into your wolf and back, and you always kept one item of clothing. The picks were random and you might be left in nothing but your underwear. Or keep a tight top and nothing else to cover your lower body. It was wise to choose your own clothes for the occasion. I then promptly flashed to the weapons room in the Alpha mansion, right in front of the wall display of my father’s katana. I kneeled before it, my legs spread, and then bowed deeply. Getting up, I closed the small distance between me and my objective and removed the katana. I glanced at the wakizashi he always used to wear with his katana. Double sword, traditional samurai sign. I decided I’d use them both, just as he had in his final battle. I unsheathed the two blades and adjusted my grip. With a final bow, I flashed out.
When I took form at my destination, a small shiver coursed through my body. It was pretty cold out here. Well, northern mountains in Mongolia weren’t known for their excessive heat in the middle of autumn.
I had chosen Siberian Killer territory, the fastest way to pick a fight with other werewolves. The one rule they had was any shifter that stepped foot on their territory would be killed. Here I was, standing tall, all focused, muscles bulging under the strain and excitement of an impending battle, taunting whoever was nearby.

Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 5:18 in a morning I wouldn’t have seen if not for the knocking—no, the pounding on my door. The steady cadence of the banging had rattled the plaster in the walls, knocking an old picture damn near on my head. I’d awoken with a groan and tried to ignore the knocking, because if it was the cops beating on my door before the sun was even up then I didn’t wanna know or remember what the hell it was that I’d supposedly done.

Still, it didn’t stop. It kept going until one of my neighbors came out and yelled. Not wanting to be the most-hated guy in the building, since that honor actually belonged to the hoarder in apartment 3C, I rolled from the bed, stumbled over the tangle of my discarded clothes, stepped on the ashtray, and damn near broke my neck on a four-pack of Monster I’d left on the floor. I wrenched the door open, forgetting about the chain, and the recoil yanked me into the rough wooden surface as I fumbled around sleepily before getting the chain undone.
A growled, “What the fuck?” from me, a gasp and a flurry of female hands covering the eyes of a small child, and suddenly I was quite a bit more awake than I’d been. Awake enough to realize I was buck naked with at least three of my neighbors looking on and a vaguely familiar redhead sputtering, gasping, blushing, and glaring at me.
inside cover_1
“Kimber?” I stammered, rubbing the sleep from my eyes as I leaned there, looking into her furious blue eyes.
“For God’s sake, Asher,” she hissed, “go put some clothes on!”
“Uhh, yeah,” I muttered, making my way back to my room, my fuzzy brain trying to figure out why the hell my brother’s ex was on my doorstep at the asscrack of dawn. By the time I made it back to the door she’d seen herself and the kid in, closed and chained the door behind her, and was looking around the kitchen with her nose wrinkled in what could only be disdain. I saw her eyes widen when she looked at the pile of dishes and empty bottles in the sink, and then they narrowed as she turned toward me, frowning at my appearance.
“So, uhh, what brings ya by?” I asked as I brushed my fingers through my hair, trying to tame all those strands that seemed determined to stick everywhere. When was the last time I’d had a haircut, anyway?
I tried to give her a smile, but I wasn’t much for people, especially not two hours after I’d staggered in, and the look she was giving me was screaming loud and clear that a pleasant grin wasn’t gonna cool her temper.
Her arms were crossed, and a little face peered around her. “Do you ever answer your phone?”
“It had an unfortunate accident with a pot of chili and I ain’t gotten around to replacing it yet,” I told her, still feeling like an idiot for having dropped the goddamned phone in the pot. Might not have happened if I hadn’t been shaking the damn thing like it was garlic powder while yelling into the garlic-powder jar like a raving lunatic, but that’s what happens when I cook drunk and angry.
She sighed, frustrated, and pulled the little boy from behind her so I could see him. “You do remember your nephew Rory?”
I squinted at the kid. “Uhh, yeah; he, uhh, grew?” It did look like he’d grown since I’d seen him last, I thought. When the hell had I seen him last?
“Yes, Asher, kids grow. Shocking, isn’t it,” she said, and man, did she look pissed… and so very fuckable. I couldn’t help thinking how fun it would be to slide my hands over all those curves, grab a handful of breast, and see how well I could mold that lush little body against mine. God, did I really still think that about my ex-sister-in-law?
I opened my mouth to say something, and then decided silence might be the best bet. No such luck. She went for silence, too; then glaring, until the glare got too heavy and she snapped.
“Aren’t you even going to ask what your nephew and I have come all this way for?” she asked, foot tapping on the cracked green linoleum of my floor.
“Uhh, sure,” I said, knowing with all the uhhing I was doing I likely sounded like a moron by now, but hell, it was five in the bloody morning in my own goddamned kitchen; I had a right to sound like a moron, didn’t I? “Why are you guys here?”
“My boss is relocating me to Montreal. It’s a promotion and Lord knows I need it, but I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to get settled and find a good apartment and a good school for Rory.”
As she spoke, she fidgeted and twisted one long braid the way she’d always done when she was nervous; meanwhile, I was still trying to figure out what the hell it had to do with me.
“I can’t take him with me while I try to do all that,” she said at last.
“Okay, so…” I began, trying to find words that weren’t going to unleash all that fury she had bubbling beneath the surface. Hell, I could practically see the steam erupting out of her ears as her fingers clenched around her braid so hard I feared she’d yank it from her head.
“I need you to watch him.”
My eyes widened so much I could feel the scar pulling at the edge of the left one. “You want me to what?” I was wide awake now, with the words “no way in hell” right on the tip of my tongue.

Interview with Alina Popescu

Having loved Alina's first Bad Blood book, I couldn't wait t get my hands on the second one. Which, I'm happy to report is just as good! Check out my review here

In celebration of the release of the second book of the series, The Breaking of Bonds, Alina accepted to answer some of my questions. Enjoy!

1. You now have several titles available and a few more coming up. What do you find more rewarding when it comes to the writing business?
I have a few, yes, and several more are planned for this year. The most rewarding part? Getting to create this worlds, meeting their dwellers, and watching them as they go through their journeys. Some are funny, others are sad, almost all are complicated. I feel like I am part of so many different realms and I can never get bored. It sometimes comes with some demon purging of my own, at least that was the case for the Bad Blood trilogy. I guess the world should be thankful for that bit, one less crazy villain trying to take over the world. I am fondly called the Queen of Everything after all :D

2. What is the part you find more challenging about writing a book?
Well, there are some emotional parts that I know are coming and really don’t want to get into, but I have to soldier through them. The rule of the thumb is: if you’ve read a bit of my stories and they made you sad or you’ve downright cried, I probably cried a river. Also, there’s that bit when characters decide they want to go their own way and mess up my story. Luckily, that does not happen very often and when it does, they always are right.

3. Which is your favorite quote from The Breaking of Bonds?
It’s actually the one I’ve used in the teasers where Alexa share’s her opinion on love with Seth. It’s pretty much a depiction of my own thoughts on the matter, so it was really amazing to be able to voice it.

4. How did the idea for Bad Blood series appear?
I had been dabbling and trying to get a vampire story sorted out for a couple of years when the idea came to me. I was roller blading my way through one of my favorite parks in Bucharest, running in circles around the lake with loud music blaring in my ear buds. I took a break, sat on a bench for a bit. Thankfully I was wearing huge sun glasses so no one noticed I was crying. I just tried to put the feeling into words in my mind and it turned into this crazy inner rant about what had brought me to that place. It was what I saw as bad relationships, and that took a life of its own and spawned one of Alexa’s inner monologues right at the end of The Edge of Hope. The rest was easy, Malta was one of my moving plans, I was itching to go back to writing and I came up with Anthony as the first love interest for Alexa.
Originally, Anthony was going to be it. But let’s face it, things are rarely that easy, and Louis came out of nowhere. Things just spun out of control and I ended up with a trilogy :D

5. There are a lot of mythological beings. Why vampires?
Vampires are the first of the supernatural beings to fascinate me. Sure, myths go beyond that (winks at the Egyptian god names in the book), but of the paranormal ones, they were my first love. I did quite a bit of research on the myths at university and I’ve tried to read as many vampire books as I could over the years. I won’t even begin to talk about movies and series, I try not to miss any, unless they are straight up horrors.

6. I just finished The Breaking of Bonds and I can honestly say that I am waiting for the next book in the series. When can we expect it and what do you have in store for us?

The third and final part of this trilogy, The Fall of Darkness, will be released sometime in November. I don’t have a clear date for it, but it won’t be a very long wait.

If you enjoyed the interview, check out The Breaking of Bonds:

A human sacrifice throws vampires of two worlds, trueborn and baseborn, into an escalating conflict. One side pushes for revenge, the other for freedom. The trueborns stubbornly hunt for Anthony and Louis, pushed by Hesrah’s desire to avenge her human best friend, Alexa. The baseborns are divided between rallying with those challenging the rule of Ankhsis and obeying the trueborns.
What emerges from the portal between Earth and Ankhsis in the middle of the turmoil rocking both worlds is more dead than alive. Neither human, nor baseborn, and certainly not trueborn. This new being will either damn them all or be their race’s most powerful weapon. Will they trust it not to destroy them, or will Ankhsis decide putting it down is the only solution?
In the end, who is guilty? Who will pay? Will anyone survive its wrath?
